There are many things that can cause a pedestrian accident

As a pedestrian, the last thing on your mind is being involved in an accident with a car. While you know this could happen, you don't spend much time thinking about it, as it's not a pretty thought.

Unfortunately, you should always remember one thing to be true: Pedestrian accidents can and do happen from time to time, more frequently than most would care to believe.

When you understand the cause of pedestrian accidents, you will gain the knowledge necessary to help avoid trouble. While there is no guaranteed way to prevent an accident, there are steps you can take to improve your chance of remaining safe.

Some of the top causes of pedestrian accidents include:

-- Distracted driving. An example of this would be a person who is texting and driving as they approach an intersection. If they're not watching the road, the driver could hit a person who is crossing the street.

-- Speeding and other forms or reckless driving. The faster a vehicle is traveling, especially in a city setting, the greater chance there is that the person will cause an accident. Other forms of reckless driving include failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, neglecting to use turn signals, and running a stop sign or traffic light.

-- Disregarding traffic conditions. Simply put, drivers need to change their approach as the result of traffic conditions. For example, the way you drive in heavy traffic will not be the same as when there are no other vehicles on the road.

-- Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. With this, drivers are unable to make sound decisions, thus increasing the likelihood of striking a pedestrian.

Remember this: Even if you are walking on the sidewalk, you could still be injured in an accident.

If you are hit by a car as a pedestrian, don't try to move. Instead, call for help yourself or have somebody else do this for you. It's imperative to receive immediate medical attention.

Once you're feeling better and have a long term treatment plan in place, learn more about the accident and your legal rights. As soon as you determine the cause of the accident, you can decide if filing a lawsuit would be in your best interest. This may allow you to receive compensation for your injuries.
