How worried are you about workplace violence?

One can hardly turn on the television or glance at the newsfeed on social media sites without hearing or reading about violent acts occurring all over the world.

But there are times when this violence explodes a little too close to home for many workers across the nation. Such was recently the case at the Potrero Hill United Parcel Service hub when one driver, 38, wounded two co-workers and killed three others, then himself.

Statistics indicate that, over the last 10 years, incidences of California workplace fatalities have dropped off. But one exception remains. Fatalities from acts of violence and other assaults have risen precipitously.

Data culled from the state Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (CFOI) show that more workplace deaths are attributed to suicides and homicides than from combined incidences involving contact with objects, equipment failures, falls and environmental exposures to harmful substances.

It's worrisome when violence and assaults represent the primary cause of death for workers in California. Should the workforce really be in fear for their lives simply because they showed up as scheduled for work?

Red flags of risk for employers

Below are seven different factors that present enhanced risks of workplace violence to occur. Employers have a duty to mitigate these factors in order to keep their employers free from harm while on he job.

1. An employee works the graveyard shift alone.

2. Money is exchanged.

3. The employee is safeguarding valuables or money.

4. Items of value are available.

5. An employee has a history of committing assaults or who has behaved belligerently, made threats to co-workers or supervisors or attempted to intimidate them.

6. Employees work in their communities providing public safety services.

7. The routinely work with clients, students, patients, customers or passengers with suspected or know violent histories.

If you are assaulted while on the job or while doing business as a customer in an establishment, you have the right to seek compensation for your injuries and other damages.
