Signs you might have whiplash

After a traumatic event, you might feel like your heart is racing or experience confusion and disorientation. For some people, the adrenaline rush is so strong that it may take several days before the full impact of the occurrence hits them.

This is true for even a minor car accident. It is because of this delayed awareness that you should always see a doctor immediately following a car accident. Just because you can't feel the effects of an injury right away does not mean that one did not occur.

Even in the San Rafael area, there is probably at least one car accident every day. If you have been unlucky enough to be involved in a collision with a negligent driver, you have probably suffered some sort of injury, even if it is not immediately obvious. Read further to find out more about some early signs of whiplash.

Whiplash

When you have been the victim of a rear-end accident, it is likely that you might suffer whiplash. This particular injury occurs when the force of the impact causes your head to jerk backward and forward to an extent that it exceeds the normal range of motion.

Depending on the severity of the wreck, your whiplash could range from moderate to severe. In some cases, you might feel the pain instantly while in others, it can take a day or more before you start to experience discomfort.

Pain and stiffness

The most common indication of whiplash that you may not feel at first is pain or stiffness. Once things have settled down and you are back at home after an accident, you might begin to feel the muscles around the injured area begin to tighten up. This is the body's natural response to protect the area and prevent further damage. The pain or stiffness could occur in your shoulders, upper back, and of course, the neck.

Headaches

Whiplash headaches are different from the usual headaches you might experience. Whereas you might get a throbbing pain in your forehead or around the temples after a hard day at work, a whiplash headache will start at the base of your skull and work its way up toward your ears. You may feel it as a sharp pain or it could be a dull ache.

Dizziness and vision problems

A whiplash injury can also cause dizziness because of the damage to the nerves in the neck. You may feel like you just stepped off a spinning ride at a carnival if you have whiplash. It you do not receive treatment, the vertigo could last for more than a day.

If you have been in a car wreck with a reckless or distracted driver, you may have suffered more than just damage to your car even if you felt fine in the moments after the collision. Visit your doctor or an emergency clinic as soon as possible so that you can receive the treatment you need. Your attorney will be able to help you file a claim for the damages so that you don't have to suffer financially as well as physically.
