California’s Dog Bite Liability Laws
California has some of the strongest dog bite protections in the country. Under the state’s “strict liability” rule, a dog owner is usually responsible if their dog bites someone, even if the dog has never shown aggression before. In many cases, you do not have to prove the owner knew the dog was dangerous. If you were lawfully on public or private property and the dog bit you, the owner may be financially liable for your injuries.
There are, however, limited exceptions that could affect a claim, such as:
- Trespassing on private property
- Provoking, hurting, or harassing the dog
- Injuring or threatening the dog’s owner
- The dog was conducting a lawful police or military action
Because every situation is unique, speaking with an experienced attorney can clarify whether you have a valid claim and what your options may be. If you were attacked by a dog, you should at least call (628) 240-1014 to go over your options because our case reviews are FREE.
Don’t settle for less. Fight for full compensation.

"They held my hand thru the whole thing, answering my silly calls with questions and showing great patience."
I found the Kuvara Law Firm when I did a search for personal injury attorneys. I scanned down the possibilities but their name jumped out at me. I called, sure I didn't have a claim because I've never done this before, but on reviewing my case Mr. Kuvara said I DO have a case and assigned me to the appropriate person to get things started. They were always very friendly and encouraging whenever I contacted them. Colby is an absolute doll! Then when I had my fall and concussion Mr. Kovara referred me to a colleague at another firm that specializes in that type of case. They, too, were good and helpful and full of information I'd never think of! Everything was perfect, they really knew their jobs at both firms and took great care of me. I can't recommend them highly enough and will keep their contact information in my wallet ready to share with all who may ask! Thanks so much, Colby!

"Mr. Kuvara and his team are truly amazing! He is the most kind hearted and will do everything he can to win your case."
They are very prompt with responses and follow up. The entire process was stress free (especially going through this during the middle of the pandemic) and seamless! He heard, understood my pain and had the most sincerest empathy for me. This review has been LONG overdue. He took care of me in 2020 and has left an everlasting impression in my life. I recommend everyone to Mr. Kuvara and his outstanding team! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

"Colby was professional, caring and listened carefully to what our son's desired outcomes were."
Our adult son was hit by a car while on vacation in San Rafael CA. We recieved the call the night before Thanksgiving 2022. We flew from MPLS to San Fransisco and got to the hospital where our son was. He was injured badly, after emergency brain surgery he was placed in a medically induced coma he woke up after three day's. We decided as a family to contact an attorney. We contacted Kuvara Law firm and talked with Colby. Colby assured us that the only interest she had was the well being of our son. She went above and beyond to navigate out of state insurance and an entire host of other issues. Our entire family would recomend Kuvara Law firm to anyone looking for representation.

Dog Bites Can Cause More Serious Injuries Than You Think
Even a bite that looks minor at first can lead to significant complications. Dog bites often involve deep puncture wounds, torn tissue, and bacteria that increase the risk of infection. Some victims require stitches, surgery, or reconstructive procedures. Children are especially vulnerable to facial injuries and emotional trauma, so how the bite affects them in the future must be taken into account.
Common dog bite injuries include:
- Lacerations and puncture wounds
- Nerve or muscle damage
- Broken bones
- Scarring and disfigurement
- Infection or rabies concerns
- Psychological trauma, including anxiety around animals
Getting urgent medical care can protect both your health and your legal claim. Medical records document the extent of your injuries and help show how the bite has affected your life. Reaching out to an attorney early can also help preserve evidence by letting our team begin our investigation sooner rather than later.
Insurance Coverage Often Pays Dog Bite Claims
Many people worry about suing a friend, neighbor, or family member after a dog bite. In reality, most dog bite claims are not paid out of the owner’s personal pocket. Instead, compensation often comes from insurance coverage. Homeowners, renters, or pet liability policies frequently include protection for dog bite incidents.
Our role is to identify the available coverage and handle the insurance company for you. Because Neal Kuvara previously worked as an insurance claims adjuster, we understand exactly how insurers evaluate claims and where they try to limit payouts. That insider knowledge allows us to prepare strong cases, anticipate common tactics, and negotiate from a position of strength.
We may pursue compensation for:
- Emergency and ongoing medical expenses
- Future treatment or reconstructive care
- Lost wages or reduced earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Scarring or permanent disability
- Emotional distress
With decades of experience and a 99% settlement rate, we focus on resolving claims efficiently while always preparing thoroughly for trial, just in case. However, it is worth noting that many of our successful cases reach a settlement within 6 to 9 months, which is a lot less time than the 2 to 3 years that litigation often requires.
